One bill by Republican Assemblywoman Mimi Walters would apply to Californians honorably discharged from the military that have exhausted their education benefits under the G.I. bill.  Her measure would waive tuition for them at U.C., Cal State and community college campuses.   Walters says helping veterans complete their education is a way to pay them back. 

“I mean after all they have spent their time defending our country and if we can help give them a little extra boost when it comes to education it helps us all in the long run…”
 
Walters’ bill will be reviewed in the Appropriations committee where its fiscal impact will be determined.

Other bills already approved by the Assembly include one measure that would give the state the ability to prosecute people who falsely claim to have earned military honors. Another bill would give ten days of unpaid leave so that spouses could spend time together when one comes back from a deployment.
