At first California growers thought the entire orange crop was wiped out by the mid-January freeze.  But Bob Blakely, with California Citrus Mutual, which represents 2 thousand growers, says there’s been some good news:
 
What has been a little bit surprising is that in some areas we’re finding a higher percentage of good fruit than what we had anticipated.
 
Blakely says those areas are located in the foothills of the Central Valley, where temperatures stayed a few degrees warmer than the rest of the state during the freeze.  Growers there expect to send about 75 percent of their crop to market.  But even just a few miles away, growers are reporting their crops are totally ruined.  Overall, Blakely says, the state has still lost 80 percent of its orange crop.
