Sacramento Regional Transit officials say it’s too early to get an official tally but they do have unscientific proof: more cars parked in their park-and-ride lots.

"In the last four to five weeks we have actually seen in the neighborhood of a 4 to 5% increase in the number of people that are parking their cars in the lots. That generally would equate to that level of an increase, certainly on the rail system."

RT’s Deputy General Manager Mike Wiley says last September when gas prices when up to about $3.00 a gallon, ridership levels hit an all time record of over 3 million people using both buses and light rail.
