The heavily armed Iowa was launched during World War Two and was instrumental in a number of major campaigns in the Pacific. In the years following the war the Iowa was called upon for a number of assignments. For the past 14 years, ship has been on reserve status. Since 2001 she has been docked near San Francisco. The Navy is considering donating the nearly nine hundred yard long ship, as a cost-cutting measure. Richard Aschieris, the Director of the Port of Stockton says because of her legacy the Iowa would make a terrific museum. He says a modest admission’s fee would cover the upkeep anticipated at about two million dollars a year. ASCHIERIS :10--We seem to think that for the price of maybe a dollar or two more than you’d spend to get into a movie, you could see one of the most historic ships. In its application to the Navy the Port of Stockton has indicated it would provide a dock, a building, and parking space to accommodate visitors. Bob Hensley KXJZ News.
