Many frequent users of the Med Center’s E-R don’t need to be there. It’s because there aren’t other options in the community that they can get to or that they feel are effective. Pete Simpson is a member of the Sacramento Effective Medical Project task force. He says many repeat patients suffer from mental health disorders and substance abuse. Their plan is to link those patients with appropriate social and psychiatric services. In our community the model will be a social service office that’s inside the emergency room and ready to work with patients while they’re there at the ER waiting to be seen medially. The project has just received a 900-thousand dollar grant from The California Endowment and the California HealthCare Foundation. Project coordinators plan to start enrolling clients in January.
