Mike McMullen Sits In With Gary Vercelli
On Wednesday, July 15 at 7 p.m. Music Director Gary Vercelli turns the jazz music programming of Capital Public Radio over to saxophonist Mike McMullen. Mike’s programming reflects world music’s influence on jazz, featuring work by John McLaughlin, Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane, and Chick Corea.
Mike McMullen is a founding member of the Sacramento region’s premiere jazz group, the Capital Jazz Project. Since its inception, CJP has produced dozens of thematic concerts featuring numerous national and internationally known soloists. CJP also reaches out to the community with jazz mentoring and educational activities.
As an educator, Mike spent three years on the staff at the DickGroveSchool in Los Angeles. He initiated the Newpark Jazz Program in Dublin, Ireland and spent twelve years as director of jazz ensembles at U.C. Davis. Mike currently serves on the jazz faculty at SacramentoStateUniversity, where he teaches improvisation and theory and directs jazz combos.
Over the years Mike has worked and recorded with jazz greats Dave Liebman, Randy Brecker, Bobby Shew, Pat LaBarbara, and Kenny Wheeler. He studied extensively with saxophone legend Joe Henderson.
