So far, the buzz has focused on the city’s struggling downtown. The developer of the massive Railyards project, just north of downtown, says it’s submitting a proposal. And Sacramento restaurateur Ali Mackani says he’s part of a group looking at a couple of different sites, though he says they might not send a proposal in after all.
Earlier this week, Mayor Johnson said he expects at least a couple developers to throw their hats in the ring.
Johnson: “I’ve heard from indirectly probably half a dozen people interested in submitting. If a third of those submit, that’s great. That’s two more proposals than we had.”
Johnson also says he wants the task force to look at two sites outside downtown, whether they get proposed or not: Arco Arena in Natomas; and the state fairgrounds at Cal Expo, where the economy has slowed the NBA’s negotiations over an arena.
The task force will take up to three months to examine the proposals before picking which ones – if any – to recommend to the mayor.
