At issue is payment for indigent care services - medical care for thousands of poor Sacramento residents. Sacramento County had a contract to pay the UC Davis Health System for this care from July 2008 through this September. David Levine is the medical center’s legal counsel.

“UC Davis provided care to the medically indigent population. The county has failed to pay or process claims to the tune of perhaps $130 million.”

In the lawsuit UC Davis says that the County on several occasions has acknowledged that it owes the money but can’t pay up. During the span of that contract Sacramento County made several rounds of budget cuts totaling $180 million. A county official says he hopes the lawsuit can be resolved outside of court.
