A few dozen protesters rallied outside the capitol today/Tuesday. They’re upset with spending cuts in the budget package signed by Governor Schwarzenegger.
Capital Public Radio's Steve Shadley reports...
(Sound of chanting protesters up and under) Cut Time: 07 seconds “Hey, Hey, Ho, Ho...The Budget Games Have Got To Go! Hey, Hey, Ho, Ho...”
The protesters say cuts to education and health care are “devastating” for low income families and students.
Steven Hansen is a utility worker with the Folsom-Cordova School district in the Sacramento area. He says the cuts are forcing his district to close school libraries and reduce its janitorial staff...
“If they only clean the classrooms once a week can you imagine how dirty the classes are going to get? The dirty doorknobs and desks...the seats...the water fountains, etc. So how do we keep up?”
The protesters vow to fight to get some of the funding cuts reinstated in future state budgets. They say they’ll be supporting gubernatorial candidates in next year’s election who would raise corporate and tobacco taxes to fully fund state
