Stanislaus County is about eight million dollars short of balancing its nine hundred sixty million dollar budget. Officials have already made extensive cuts in programs and personnel to try make ends meet. The state could complicate the county’s fiscal situation if the legislature, in an effort to address its shortfall, decides to target revenue sources normally earmarked for local governments. Jim DeMartini is the Chairman of the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors. 

"What they’re planning on doing is taking our road maintenance money by keeping the money from fuel taxes. It would eliminate ninety percent of that departments’ budget." 

Stanislaus has a reserve fund, but if significant revenue is lost to the state, officials could have to make more cuts, possibly from the budgets of public safety agencies.
